Social Work - Milligan University

The mission of Milligan University Social Work is to educate and empower bold servant-leaders to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities through the field of social work.

The Social Work major is designed for the student who desires to pursue a ministry of service to the human community in work with social agencies and/or other fields of social work, or who is preparing to pursue graduate education in the field.

Students are prepared to:

The curriculum emphasizes the principles, ethics, and practices of accredited social work programs within the context of a Christian liberal arts university. The major and minor are designed to ensure that each student receives a broad background in social work fundamentals and social work practices.The social work curriculum emphasizes a competency-based approach to prepare students for generalist practice at the baccalaureate level. The curriculum includes classroom instruction as well as fieldwork education.

Milligan University Social Work is currently in Pre-Candidacy for Accreditation

Milligan University Social Work is currently in Pre-Candidacy for Accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation.

Pre-Candidacy for a baccalaureate or master’s social work program by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation indicates that it has submitted an application to be reviewed for Candidacy and had its Benchmark 1 approved in draft form to move forward with Candidacy review within one year. A program that has attained Pre-Candidacy has not yet been reviewed by the Board of Accreditation or been verified to be in compliance with the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

Students who enter programs in Pre-Candidacy that attain Candidacy in the academic year in which they begin their program of study will be retroactively recognized as having graduated from a CSWE-accredited program once the program attains Initial Accreditation. The Candidacy Process is typically a three-year process and there is no guarantee that a program in Pre-Candidacy will eventually attain Candidacy or Initial Accreditation.

Candidacy by the Council on Social Work Education’s Board of Accreditation applies to all locations and delivery methods of an accredited program. Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program.

Apply to Social Work Program

Milligan University Social Work requires a separate and specific admissions process to formally be accepted to the social work program. New students should first apply for admission to Milligan University and declare their intent to major in Social Work. Once enrolled at Milligan, students will request admission to the Social Work program in the spring of their sophomore year (application due by February 15) or the fall of their junior year (application due by September 15).

Similarly, students who transfer to Milligan University from another college or university and intend to major in social work shall apply to the social work program in the spring of their sophomore year, the fall of their junior year, or as soon possible thereafter.

Requirements include:

Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
Completion of Introduction to Social Work (SOWK 210) with a C or higher
Documentation of 50 hours of work, volunteered or paid, with an underrepresented population or population in need
Submission of social work application, including essay and two references
